EXTRA!!! EXTRA!!! NEWS!!!!

May 2012

May 15, 2012

Scholar of the Year 2012, Spanish Elementary level is named. Sydney Garrison, 5th grader at RB Hunt Elementary school, (Language Exploration Enrichment student), was recognized today at the school board meeting in St Johns County School District. Scholar of the Year is sponsored by Florida Foreign Language Association, (FFLA). Sydney received a certificate and medal from FFLA, and a certificate of recognition from Dr. Joseph Joyner, Superintendent.

Sydney was exposed to world languages at an early age. She is currently working at middle school level/Spanish. Last summer she traveled to Costa Rica and enjoyed translating for her parents. “On behalf of the LEE Team, Congratulations Sydney! You make us proud”, said Donna Guzzo, LEE Administrator and Sydney’s Spanish Instructor. LEE Co Administrator Janet Robles was present in support of Sydney. “This is the first step of a long life commitment to learning Spanish. Keep up the great work in Spanish”, Robles said.

This is the seventh consecutive year, a Language Exploration Enrichment (LEE) student is recognized by FFLA and the school board. “We thank FFLA, LEE Instructors, principals, especially Mr. Steele,, RBH Principal for his enormous support to learning a world language, parents, and school board officers for supporting LEE. It is an honor to serve St Johns County schools and being able to donate monies to participating schools for cultural awareness”, said Guzzo.

Language Exploration Enrichment was founded in 2003. Its mission is to encourage all students to explore world languages and cultures. Our goal is to introduce children to world cultures through classroom lessons, discussions, activities, technology, crafts, songs, games, etc.

Language Exploration Enrichment (LEE), is designed as an after school service to students, in ten schools within St. Johns County, with a potential for a fundraiser, (Durbin Creek, Julington Creek, Cunningham Creek, Hickory Creek, Liberty Pines Academy K-8, RB Hunt Elementary, Ocean Palms Elementary, Swiss Point Middle, Sebastian Middle School). LEE plans to start Spanish classes at Ketterlinus Elementary next school year. Proceeds from program benefit each participating school.
